A show of support

Other than a brief flicker of the lights during the rainstorm that hit the area, Monticello’s sendoff for the 257th Military Police Company of the National Guard went off without a hitch last Wednesday night at the high school’s field house.

Military leaders, clergy, political and community business leaders spoke during the hour-long ceremony, with all keeping their focus on their wishes for a safe trip for the 120-plus young men and women who were scheduled to leave Memorial Day for training at Fort Bliss, Texas, near El Paso before heading to Afghanistan for a yearlong deployment.

I thought the ceremony was well done and I enjoyed the fact that they made it more about the troops and their families than about the politicians and other big names who spoke during the ceremony
