For the quartet of Phil LaVallee, Sam Johnson, Colin Lyndorff and Derek Secord, state might actually offer them a chance to relax.
Granted, come playoffs, nothing comes easy. Regardless of the sport, everything seems to tighten up around playoff time, and both teams and individuals need breaks to go their way to come out on top.
The Magic boys track and field team hasn’t exactly gotten a lot of those breaks. As has become the norm, they were forced to compete in sections during their graduation week. The first meet, the preliminary meet came on Wednesday. The finals meet came Saturday morning, less than 12 hours after the seniors tossed their caps in the air, and less than three hours after the all-night grad party was supposed to end. Oh, and it was nearly a three-hour bus ride away, in Detroit Lakes.
Yet, some how, some way, their top athletes found a way to perform and they found a way to come out on top.
The Magic grinded through their performances on Saturday to earn three state tournament berths, including a relay team. Coach Dave Wik was certainly proud of the way his team responded to the adversity and found a way.
