So far, fishermen and women and lovers of fresh fruit have won out over baseball fans.

While the Minnesota Twins’ home opener at Target Field this summer resulted in a 5-1 loss in cold, windy conditions on April 9, the much-ballyhoed Governor’s Fishing Opener in Minnesota on May 12 and Tuesday morning’s much less official local fresh strawberry opener were greeted with idyllic weather conditions.

The scene on Tuesday at The Strawberry Basket on Aetna Ave. N.E. involved a steady stream of cars and a strawberry patch consistently heavy with traffic as pickers mined the plants for the biggest and brightest strawberries they could find under sunny skies in temperatures that were heating up to an eventual high of 81 degrees.

It’s a beautiful day
