Legion team keeps rolling

Last summer, the Monticello legion team finished the season with a strong run, before being derailed a bit earlier than they hoped in the postseason.
This year, with many of those same players back, the success is coming early and often for the boys of summer.
This week brought more of it, as Monticello reeled off two more good wins against rival baseball programs, including perennial school-ball conference favorite St. Michael.
First, on Monday night, the local nine knocked off Howard Lake 9-5 at home.
Monticello scored first with a run in the third, and then scored eight more times between the fourth and the fifth inning, before Howard Lake got on the board with five of their own late in the game.
Offensively, Monticello was led by a top of the order that 1-3 racked up 8 of their 12 hits, including a game high three for Michael Fisette.
Fisette added two RBIs and two runs scored to his damage, which Jake Schmitz tallied two hits and two RBI and Hayden Laimer added two hits and two runs scored.
Jakob Kounkel turned in a dominant start on the mound for the Magic as he went six and a third innings, allowing just one run on one hit, while striking out nine. Kounkel did walk four batters.
Spencer Host and Andrew Manning also threw, before Jake Frederick came on to close the door, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Tuesday night Monticello continued their good all-around play with a decisive 8-2 victory over St. Michael. Monticello put runs up on the board in the first four innings as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and then 7-2, never looking back.
Monticello again racked up 12 hits at the plate, led by Matt Bonk who picked up three of his own.
Frederick went eight innings for the win.
