Power outage affects 1,830 customers July 16

Monticello businesses and residents found themselves in the dark for just over 90 minutes on Monday afternoon when 1,830 local Xcel Energy customers lost power.

Two blown fuses at a local substation cut the power in the downtown Monticello area from 2 p.m. until 3:33 p.m., right when temperatures were soaring toward a high of 94 degrees.

The loss of power affected businesses such as the Monticello Community Center, Caribou Coffee and Ameriprise Financial. It also shut down the traffic lights at Highway 25 and Seventh Street, which had southbound afternoon traffic backed up almost all the way to Broadway by 2:30 p.m.
