Monticello appeared to be well on its way to continuing its strong summer season on Monday night, but a late two-inning rally helped Annandale upend Monticello 7-4.
Monticello, playing at home, scored one run in four of the first six innings, while Jake Frederick held the visitors at bay through seven innings to propel Monti to a 4-0 lead after seven.
In the eighth, the home team replaced Frederick with hard throwing reliever Jake Kounkel. Trouble ensued. Annandale scored two in the eighth to cut the lead in half. And then they scored five runs, all unearned, in the ninth inning to finish off the comeback and hand Monticello a surprise defeat.
Kounkel and Mike Fisette each had two hits for Monticello.
