Dick was born Oct. 15, 1944 in Monticello, the son of Kenneth and Marie (Nelson) Hickman. He grew up and attended school in Monticello, and graduated with the class of 1963. On June 6, 1964, Dick married Marie Overby, in Silver Creek, Minn.
The couple was blessed with seven children; two daughters, Brenda and Shannon, surviving into adulthood. They later divorced and Dick remained in Monticello. He worked for a dairy farm followed by Dechanes Potato Farms for 17+ years. It was at this time Dick met Margaret Cantin. Together they had great companionship for many years until her death in 1993. As Dick’s health began to deteriorate, he moved to Mahnomen in 2006 to live with his daughter, Brenda and Brian. During this time, Dick cherished the time spent with family and reminiscing about old times. A thoughtful caring individual, he always put others before himself even as his overall well-being declined.
Dick enjoyed farming, fishing and the great outdoors. He loved spending time with family, gardening and the freedom he felt when he was on his riding lawnmower.
Dick is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Brian Leslie) Hickman and Shannon (Scott) Lee, both of Mahnomen; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his mother, Marie Hickman, of Becker; two brothers, Keith (Shirley) Hickman of Clearwater, Minn., and Randy (Kris) Hickman of Monticello; two sisters, Sandy (Jeff) Wallin of Monticello and Marica (Tom) Boone of Big Lake, Minn., very special aunt and uncle, Shari and Russell Martie also of Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his father; children, Barbie Hickman, Amy Hickman, Lonnie Hickman and twins in infancy; infant brother Norman Hickman; grandparents; and special friend Margaret Cantin.
