Johnson, defense, help lead Magic to 6-1 mark

For the first 36 minutes of Friday night’s game at Rocori, the Monticello defense did everything that could logically be asked of them, keeping a hard-fought game tied at zero.

But as the fourth quarter begin, and the offense continued to struggle, it became apparent the Magic players had to do even more.

So, Sam Johnson did.

With 10 minutes remaining in the game, the junior stepped in front of a Spartan pass at the Monticello 13-yard line and returned it all the way, breaking the goose egg on the Magic side of the scoreboard. Jakob Kounkel added the extra point and that would prove to be all the Magic needed to notch a 7-0 victory.

Monticello won despite turning the ball over five times, including four turnovers in the second half. The Magic won largely because of a defense that allowed just three first downs in the first half. Monticello intercepted Rocori four times, including three times in the second half.

The win moves Monticello to 6-1 and keeps the Magic in control of its own destiny in both the section and conference standings as the team heads into the season’s final game, a Wednesday night showdown with 5-2 St. Michael Albertville.

Watch for a mid-day Wednesday online preview of the Magic’s final regular season game. A full Rocori game recap will appear in the Oct. 18 print edition of the Times.
