The Magic overcame an ugly first half to pick up their second win of the season in thrilling fashion over Chisago Lakes Tuesday night. The Magic used 20 points from Will Bauman to claw to a 58-56 overtime victory, despite scoring just 15 points in the first half. Hayden Laimer added 10 points, while Brody Grantz and Gunnar Nemitz each scored nine to help the Magic to the home win.
The Magic lost 60-44 at Delano last Friday night. Bauman and Laimer led the way in that one with 13 and 10 points respectively.
The Magic girls continued their strong stretch, picking up another big section win last Thursday night.
Monticello went to Delano and jumped out to an early lead on their way to a 58-51 win over the Tigers, who are considered one of the section favorites along with the Magic.
The win, Monticello’s sixth in a row, was spearheaded by Grace Sawatzke. The junior guard finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals, six assists and two blocks, leading the Magic in every major statistical category.
She was aided on offense by a balanced scoring attack as Gabby Laimer added 12, Christine Lui and Alyssa Lenter each scored 10 and Bailey Bechtold tallied seven points.
Monticello earned a 1-1 split at a Farmington triangular last Thursday.
After a close loss to Eastview, Monticello bounced back with an exciting 36-33 win over Farmington.
The Magic trailed 33-30 entering the final match, but heavyweight Brent Riddle was up to the task. His second-period pin was the difference in the Monticello victory.
