The North Wright County Riverhawks dropped a wild one Thursday night, falling 5-4 to Orono, the fifth-ranked team in Class A.
NWC jumped to a 3-1 lead, but consecutive penalties late in the game put them at a two-person disadvantage, and Orono used the advantage to wipe away the lead and take control of the final minutes. The Spartans scored four goals in the final period, with the Hawks adding the first and the last goal of the period (the final one coming with just seconds left).
Greta Stanton scored two goals for NWC.
The Hawks bounced back Tuesday night with a 7-0 win over Rogers.
The Magic dropped two non-conference games this week, falling by 24 to Elk River and by 19 points to Sartell Tuesday night.
At Elk River Saturday, Monticello fell behind 25-10 at the half on its way to a 64-40 defeat. Hayden Laimer scored 14 to lead the Magic, while Will Bauman added 10 points.
Tuesday the Magic were back at home, where they fell 60-41 to the Sabres.
Laimer led the Magic again, finishing with 14 points in the loss.
The Magic went 2-2 at their weekend tournament, dropping two close matches while picking up two convincing wins. Tevin Zavadil and Jay Yeats each went 4-0 for Monticello.
Monticello picked up two conference wins, bating Cambridge 100-84 last week and Buffalo 94-92 Tuesday night.
