Chuck and Janine Beck have opened a new barber shop in Monticello. The shop is called The Cut Hut.
“The Cut Hut” has been a family business name for over 50 years. It was first used by Chuck’s parents in Elk River. Chuck and Janine followed in their footsteps and, over the next 36 years, proceeded to open Cut Huts in Ramsey, Otsego, Apache Junction, Ariz. and now Monticello.
The Monticello location is currently the only Cut Hut open for business. It opened in late October, 2012, after the Becks had recently moved back to Minnesota. They had been living in Arizona for eight years.
They have an ideal location on Broadway in Monticello, just east of Walgreen’s. However, they were not able to move into the building right away.
“A water pipe had burst so everything was all gutted out. The landlord re-sheet rocked everything,” said Janine. The Becks have learned from clients that the building was previously home to a drive-in hamburger joint, a photo shop and a hearing aid repair shop.
Chuck and Janine are the only stylists in their shop. Chuck has 36 years of experience in the business, beginning his career as a student at Moler Barber School in Minneapolis. Janine joined him as a stylist 19 years later and they have been working together ever since. She went to school at Regency in Blaine, Minn.
Chuck and Janine have been married for 32 years and have three children and four grandchildren who all live in Minnesota.
Chuck and Janine are very happy to be back in Minnesota and have really enjoyed Monticello so far. Their favorite part of their job is getting to know their clients and helping them with their hair problems.
“We look at it as the customer has a problem, and our job is to fix the problem, whether it’s a new cut, a new brush, or whatever else,” Janine says.
The Becks offer services to men, women and children. They focus mostly on hair care, but they also do waxing and ear piercing. Their specialty is preventing and caring for thinning hair. Other hair services they offer include foiling, coloring and perms.
One unique aspect about their business is that Chuck offers an old-fashioned face and head shave with a hot lather and hot towels.
“This is very rare today,” Janine explains. “But we were doing it in Arizona and now we are doing it here.”
The old-fashioned shave is the only service that is by appointment only. All other services are available by appointment or walk-in.
The Cut Hut carries several brands of hair care products, including Nioxin, Paul Mitchell, Joico, Sebastian and American Crew. They also offer OPI nail polish. They are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 on Saturdays.
The Becks are currently offering a special $9 senior rate on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The Cut Hut can be reached at 763-314-0963.
