Lady Magic knock off state-ranked Knights

As impressive as the 21-4 start to the year has been for Monticello girls basketball, one could still argue they were lacking a “signature win”. At least until Thursday night. Monticello hosted St. Michael-Albertville, who entered the contest on an 11-game winning streak and ranked No. 8 in AAAA. The Magic weren’t fazed. Despite trailing for much of the game, Monticello pulled out a 49-48 victory, thanks in large part to a three-pointer from junior Gabby Laimer that gave Monticello the lead for good (49-47) with under two minutes to go. Laimer scored 15 in the game, including four three-pointers. Grace Sawatzke scored 17 points to lead the Magic, while Alyssa Lentner added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
“It’s a signature win,” said Coach Craig Geyen. “They’re one heck of a team. Hopefully teams take a look and say ‘holy cats, they just beat a St. Michael. Wow, they must be for real.’”
Monticello continued their winning ways with a 53-40 win over Cambridge Tuesday night. Sawatzke scored 21 to lead the Magic.
Monticello wraps up the regular season Friday night with a home game (and senior night) against Rogers at 7:15. Section play begins Tuesday.
