Letter: Monticello VFW member issues call to action regarding participation

To the editor:

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is a congressionally chartered war veteran’s organization and is the largest American organization of combat veterans.
It was established in the late 1800s to help veterans and their families during war and post war times.
The organization has more than 7,000 charters including VFW Post 8731 here in Monticello.
Monies raised through bar sales, pull tabs, food services and fundraisers are used to help our local veterans and our community. Last year, the Monticello VFW donated more than $175,000 to help others.
The Monticello VFW will be holding its elections for officers in April and is looking for a “few good men” who can help guide our post in generating funds, organizing events and fundraisers and help assist with veterans seeking assistance with benefits. We are looking for men who will follow the bylaws of our chapter and lead our organization toward a common goal.
If you are a veteran who has served overseas and are interested in helping other vets in your area, we invite you to come to our March 28 meeting to learn more. We need leaders who are team players with a healthy positive attitude and have some desire to give their time and talent to help others in need.
The need is great. Don’t let us forget those who have sacrificed so much. Please consider helping us by volunteering. We look forward to seeing you at our March 28 meeting.
