Mary H. (Carl) Kastl, 92, Monticello

Mary Hortense (Carl) Kastl, 92, Monticello, died Thursday, April 4, 2013.
Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, April 8, 10 a.m., at St. Henry Catholic Church. Visitation was Monday, April 8, 9-10 a.m. at the church.
Mary was born Jan. 15, 1921, to Katherine “Kitty” Marie (Hanson) and Coleman Josiah Carl in Sioux City, Iowa and moved to Omaha, Neb. during the Great  Depression.
She married Jim Kastl Aug. 29, 1941, in Omaha. Soon after, Jim was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mary continued to live with the Kastls, then with the Carls.
Mary quickly became the “CEO of Kastl Industries” overseeing the production of school cookies, Halloween costumes, Girl Scout activities – an original “soccer mom.”  She loved “wild  animals” and soon found their home filled with ducks, turtles, snakes, gerbils and hermit crabs!  After the animals left and the children grew up (in that order), Mary and Jim spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz, and each summer at Sugar Lake. Love abounded for her 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children Chris (Mary), Mike (Terri), Ann Marie Kastl (Mickey Fairbanks), Matt (Ellen), and Ken (Rose).
Mary was preceded in death by her husband; infant daughter Mary; sons, Steve and Tom; grandson Josh; brothers, J. Russell, Rev. J. Kenneth, R. Fallon and Jim; and sister Catherine Ann Nielson.
The family appreciated the loving care provided by staff at St. Benedict’s Senior Community.
