Cancer-free resident celebrates with 100-mile race

Five years ago, the thought of riding a 100-mile bike ride seemed downright unattainable for Big Lake resident Rick Wagner.

After feeling “really tired” for some time he mentioned it to his doctor in April 2008, and his resulting leukemia diagnosis marked the beginning of more than a year of treatment and recovery from two rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

He chose long-distance biking over the running fundraisers his daughters favored, and he completed his first 100-mile bike ride through Team in Training in 2011.
The cancer survivor said he plans to continue to do fundraising rides as long as he’s physically able to ride 100 miles. This year’s ride takes place on June 2 around Lake Tahoe.
