Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant open house June 6

Xcel Energy’s Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant will host an open house Thursday, June 6, for community members to learn about improvements made to prepare the plant for another 20 years of operation, to increase its output of clean, reliable and affordable electricity and to enhance safety.
The open house will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the plant’s training center located at 2100 W. River St.
Plant representatives will be on hand to discuss operations, safety, security and the plant’s emergency preparedness strategy.
In addition, there will be presentations that explain the generation capacity expansion project, which this year will increase the plant’s output to 671 megawatts from 600 megawatts, as well as the safety enhancements made at the plant since the March 11, 2011, incident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan.
Community members will also be able to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the control room simulator, which is an exact replica of the control room inside the plant.
