Xcel Energy’s Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant hosted an open house Thursday, June 6, for community members to learn about improvements made to prepare the plant for another 20 years of operation.
The open house was conducted  at the plant’s training center located at 2100 W. River St. Plant representatives discussed operations, safety, security and the plant’s emergency preparedness strategy. In addition, there were presentations that explain the generation capacity expansion project, which this year will increase the plant’s output to 671 megawatts from 600 megawatts, as well as the safety enhancements made at the plant since the March 11, 2011, incident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan.
Community members took behind-the-scenes tours of the control room simulator, which is an exact replica of the control room inside the plant.
