Grassroots public forum will address Sherco environmental, operating concerns

Beyond Coal Central Minnesota, a newly formed grassroots group of local citizens, will host Will Steger, polar explorer and naturalist, at a July 9 energy-related public forum at Rejoice Lutheran Church in Clearwater.
The free Tuesday event starts at 7 p.m. J. Drake Hamilton, science policy director with the nonprofit group Fresh Energy, will describe alternate, effective clean energy and clean air solutions that benefit the economy.
The Beyond Coal Central Minnesota public forum will review the costs of burning coal to the climate, natural resources, economy, and health, and the opportunities for clean energy in Minnesota. The forum will provide information on upcoming decisions associated with Xcel Energy’s Sherco 1 and 2 coal plants and opportunities for public comment regarding solar, wind, and energy efficiency technologies.
