Teen kayaks down Mississippi to New Orleans, visits Monticello

Brock Wood and Dan Anderson paddled through two area cities recently on their way to the Gulf of Mexico.
Wood, a 19-year-old cancer survivor from Alexandria, is kayaking the length of the Mississippi to raise money for lymphoma research. Anderson hopes to make much of the trip with him.
The 2,350-mile journey, which started June 17, is expected to take about 60 days from the headwaters of the Mississippi at Itasca State Park to New Orleans.
Brock’s sister, Kendra Hartsell, resides in Big Lake with her husband, Amos, and their two daughters.
When Brock kayaked through Monticello on Tuesday, June 25, Kendra held a picnic for local kids and their parents at Ellison Park.
