Feds recap Monticello nuclear plant emergency readiness exercise

State, county and local emergency response officials completed a simulated emergency exercise last week involving the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant.
Xcel Energy’s overall exercise performance was adequate and demonstrated the utility can successfully implement their emergency plan to protect public health and safety, said Robert Jickling, a senior emergency preparedness inspector with the NRC.
Gary Naskrent, exercise director with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said officials continued to demonstrate their capacity to protect residents living within a 10-mile radius of the plant during the July 23 exercise.
