Monticello Legion team has short but character-building Sub-State 12 run

Participating in this year’s Sub-State 12 Tournament in St. Cloud provided a character-building experience for Monticello’s American Legion baseball team.
Monticello advanced with a convincing 16-8 victory against Waite Park, but a second-round 4-0 loss to Little Falls dropped the team into lower bracket play.
The team rebounded with a hard-fought 5-4 win last Friday against Sartell, but couldn’t overcome a St. Cloud Chutes team that became eventual champion. St. Cloud beat Monticello 13-10 in an evening contest that forced Coach Cole Deibele to go deep into his pitching staff early in the game.
“We just said one game at a time after the first loss,”  Deibele said, recapping the tournament. “If that means throwing three or four guys, that’s what it means. You might have to throw a guy who hasn’t thrown much all year, but you just take it game by game and see what happens. It’s a win-or-go home scenario.”
