Buffalo resident McKenzie Swenson saw one of Minnesota’s premier golf events up close and personal last week by volunteering at the 3M Championship in Blaine.
Swenson walked the 18-hole Tournament Players Club (TPC) course as a junior standard bearer during the PGA Champions Tour event.
Standard bearers accompany players with a sign to identify golfers and their scores, which are updated after each hole. The pole-mounded standard weighs approximately 5 pounds.
“Being able to walk inside the ropes is a lot of fun. You avoid the crowds, and you get to walk right beside the pros,” she said, adding her participation in the 2013 tournament was her fourth year as a volunteer.
“I’ve been a standard bearer the entire time,” Swenson said. “Usually, we arrive at the first hole, and sometimes, we get to meet the players [right away]. We get to walk with the players the entire round.”
