Van hits, kills MHS graduate out for a run

Phillip Gregory LaVallee, a 2012 Monticello High School graduate, was killed Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a van while running along the shoulder of County Road 19 in Otsego.
According to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, LaVallee was running on the southbound shoulder of the road when a northbound 2007 Toyota Van, driven by Linda Louise Gullickson, 67, of Albertville,  crossed over the center line and struck him.
The sheriff’s office was notified of the accident at 12:09 p.m., and when first responders arrived they found LaVallee deceased at the scene. The driver of the van was airlifted to North Memorial in Robbinsdale by North Air Care for injuries sustained in the accident.
LaVallee attended school and ran cross country and track and field at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. He was 19 years old.

In an interview he was asked what’s one thing you’d like to do before you die? by a reporter. Phil answered; ” I’d like to win my hometown, Monticello’s 5K race.” Phil won that earlier this summer. He even set a record. My point being that he was an amazing kid and this tragic event took someone special from our town. Best wishes for his family. He meant a lot to a lot of people.
