A powerful thunderstorm with hail that rolled through the Monticello area late Thursday morning produced localized street flooding. The Monticello Fire Department was dispatched to provide Highway 25 traffic control at key intersections.
According to City Administrator Jeff O’Neill, the city did receive a few calls about water in the streets, but typically, in most instances, street flooding during a heavy storm may be troublesome but it isn’t a precursor to serious home and basement flooding.
O’Neill did state in an email the city’s the storm sewer system does have its limits in terms of drainage.
“In almost all cases, there are street overflow channels that direct water to storm water ponds if street drainage capacity in the storm sewer cannot keep up,” he said.
