A Wright County Sheriff’s Office special investigations unit executing a Monticello Township search warrant found a 7-inch pipe bomb that was later detonated.
Members of the Bloomington Bomb Squad secured the device and exploded it in the backyard of a residence in the 3200 block of 88th St. N.E. last Friday.
According to Capt. Dan Anselment with the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, the search warrant was executed around 10:45 a.m. Sept. 14. Patrol deputies were also involved in the controlled substance search.
“When we executed the warrant, there were a total of six people inside the residence,” Anselment said. During the initial part of the search, an officer discovered a 7-inch galvanized pipe with screw-type caps on either end with a wick sticking out of the top. “It obviously resembled some kind of explosive device. Typically, when something like that happens, we just freeze the scene, get everybody out of the house, and we contact a local bomb squad,” he said.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office normally contacts the Bloomington Bomb Squad for assistance, he added.“We made a phone call to them, and based upon the conversation, they decided to come out with their team of people,” Anselment said.
