IRET apartment project stalls when Monticello council vote fails

A simple majority of Monticello City Council members liked the idea of St. Cloud-based IRET Properties building a 92-unit apartment building on 5.2 vacant acres of land. However, that level of support wasn’t enough to push the proposed project at the southeast quadrant of County Highway 39 and Hart Boulevard through a Sept. 23 city council meeting.
That’s because a necessary comprehensive plan amendment required supermajority approval.
City leaders did approve a rezoning ordinance on a 3-2 vote, but a similar tally a few minutes later doomed the project. IRET needed rezoning and re-designation of the city’s land use requirements to move forward.
