Gladys W. Brown, 88, Big Lake, passed away Wednesday Oct. 2, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Coon Rapids. Visitation will be Saturday Oct. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 E. Broadway, Monticello. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Rhodel Jacobson officiating. Interment will be at Big Lake Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello.
Gladys was born on March 17,1925 in Aurora, Illinois to Frank and Emma (Goepel) Walker. She graduated from Aurora West High School. She served in the Nurses’ Corps and studied nursing at Copley Hospital in Aurora, Ill. She worked at the Monticello-Big Lake Hospital (now Centra Care Health-Monticello), and the University of Minnesota Hospital as a registered nurse.
In Monticello, she was instrumental in establishing the operating room and emergency room nursing operations when the hospital first opened. She also helped establish the ambulance service in the Monticello and Big Lake communities. She later served on the Board of Directors for the Monticello-Big Lake Hospital District. She was married to George “Bud” Brown on Jan. 14, 1950, and for many years the couple owned and operated the Shore Acres Campground in Big Lake.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, LynnKay Brown (husband Michael Vuister) of Saylorsburg, PA; daughter-in-law Marilyn (Earl) Brown Gerads of Coon Rapids; granddaughters Kayla (Adam) Zechmann of Blaine, Hayley Brown of Cheyenne, WY; significant other James H. Odden and his family of Big Lake; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Emma Walker; husband George “Bud”; son Galen F. Brown; and sister Dorothy (Vern) Slagley. Memorials are preferred to the donors choice.
