Author David LaRochelle visits Pinewood third graders

Pinewood Elementary School third graders were treated to a visit by Minnesota author and illustrator David LaRochelle last week. His visit was sponsored by Pinewood PTO and included whole group presentations, small group art workshops, and writing lessons in each individual classroom. LaRochelle captured the attention of students and helped them focus on improving writing using imagination and perseverance. He advised,  “There’s nothing wrong with changing your writing to improve a story.”  He shared art and writing tips and techniques in each session. On revising, he counseled, “Never just stop if you feel stuck. Re-read your story to see if you can do a better job.”  He added more tips: Use all five senses to revise. Include strong, specific words. LaRochelle signed copies of his more popular titles and motivated many to venture out of comfort zones in writing and art.  “Keep trying … don’t give up!” was a memorable quote during the two-day visit.
