The Monticello Fire Department received assistance Oct. 25 from five different area departments at a hay barn fire in Monticello Township.
The Friday afternoon fire at 6734 Edmonson Ave. was reported to emergency dispatchers shortly before 4 p.m. According to Fire Chief Steve Joerg, Maple Lake, Buffalo, Albertville, St. Michael and Delano provided assistance, with the Big Lake Fire Department covering Monticello’s service area.
The fire destroyed the barn, which was filled with hay bales. No injuries or loss of livestock were reported, Joerg said. “As soon as I came over the Highway 25 and Interstate 94 overpass, I could see a huge column of smoke, so I made the call right away for mutual aid.”
According to Joerg, a tight driveway at the residence made it difficult for firefighters to set up equipment. Deputies from Wright County Sheriff’s Office prevented traffic from entering the area as fire department tankers made numerous trips to refill with water. Joerg said the hay barn was destroyed by the fast-moving fire.
“The Delano department provided their rehabilitation trailer, which allows firefighters to relax,” he said. “Allina EMS also was checking our blood pressures and heart rates at the scene because there was a lot of heat.”
According to Joerg, the property owners were not home when the fire call was dispatched. The hay barn collapsed inward, containing the fire and its heat.
“It was windy, and we had to contend with five or six spot fires,” Joerg said, adding approximately 40 firefighters from various departments worked the scene.
