Vern A. Masteller, 88, Litchfield

Vern A. Masteller, 88, Litchfield, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
Funeral service was Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, 2 p.m., at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation was Sunday, 3-6 p.m., at the church and one hour prior to the service. Interment was in the Lake Ripley Cemetery.
Vern Arthur Masteller, the son of George and Martha (Bugner) Masteller, was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Mansfield, S.D. He grew up in the Aberdeen area and moved with his family to the Clearwater, Minn. area where he attended and graduated from Monticello High School in 1943. He farmed with his family in the Clearwater area after high school. On June 14, 1945, he married Ruth Hickman in Hasty, Minn. They continued farming in that area before moving to Forest City in 1962 where they continued to farm for four more years. Vern was an active member of St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ. In 1964, Vern took a job with the Thulien Brothers helping to build the Litchfield High School. In 1966, he began working for the school district as the supervisor of building and grounds until he retired in 1987. Ruth died in 1990. On Dec. 12, 1992, he was married to Regina Hed. They  lived in Litchfield; six years on Lake Ripley.
He became a confirmed member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Vern was active in the community and volunteered as a bus driver for Augustana. He also enjoyed driving a school bus to sporting events and as a substitute driver. Vern was a longtime member of the Litchfield Kiwanis Club and the Owls. He enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Happy Ramblers Camping Club. He and Regina traveled to Europe, Hawaii and all over the Continental U.S. They wintered in the southern U.S. for nearly ten years.
Vern was very talented with a scroll saw. His family has appreciated receiving many of his scroll saw gifts. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and going to coffee with friends.
Vern is survived by his wife, Litchfield; children, Marilyn (George) Meline, Litchfield; Phyllis (Archie) Holtz,  St. Cloud; Lola (Michael) Hendrickson, Lakeville; Steven (Sharon) Masteller, Minnetonka; Charlotte (Richard) Sullivan, Glencoe; Marvin (Cindy ) Masteller, Buffalo; Laura Smude, Maple Grove; stepchildren, Randy (Marilyn) Hed, Dassel; Diane (Mark) Nicholson, Litchfield; and Cindy (Jim) Salfer, Dassel. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; brother Herbert (Phyllis) Masteller, St. Cloud; and sister Arlys Gamble, Maple Grove.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Ruth; and grandsons, Jesse and Troy Sullivan.
