Multiple emergency units from the Monticello Fire Department responded Monday afternoon to a serious Interstate 94 accident west of Monticello.

Monticello Fire Chief Steve Joerg reported that a vehicle rear-ended a semi-tractor trailer truck at Milemarker 191 westbound. Monticello crews cut one person free from the vehicle; that was person taken by air ambulance to an undisclosed  Twin Cities hospital, Joerg said.

Joerg said his department dispatched one engine, two utility trucks and a water tender to the I-94 accident. Monticello fire crews set up a landing zone for an air ambulance helicopter and provided traffic support for the Minnesota State Patrol.

At 3:05 p.m. the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) reported westbound Interstate 94 was reduced to a single lane about one mile west of Monticello due to the crash. The ramp from Highway 25 to westbound I-94 in Monticello is also closed.
