As a child living in Forest Lake, Minnesota one of Gary’s favorite activities was riding around the neighborhood in his goat buggy. He resided there until his mother got remarried to Harry Stolp and the family moved to Hasty, Minnesota. Gary graduated from Monticello High School in 1960 and shortly after married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Lind. They raised their family near Little Eagle Lake outside of Monticello, where the family enjoyed boating, fishing, snowmobiling, ice skating and horseback riding.
Gary worked as a shear operator at DeBourgh Manufacturing for many years before pursuing other occupations that included owning and operating a taxi service, owning and operating a fishing resort in northern Minnesota, and owning and operating an adult foster care home both in the state of Washington and Minnesota. Gary’s final occupation before retirement was as the manager of Mississippi Shores in Monticello where he enjoyed card games and pizza parties with the residents.
Gary had a passion for horses and he and Marge enjoyed many trail rides throughout 13 different states while being members of a local saddle club. He raised and sold Missouri Foxtrotters from his hobby farm outside of Monticello. Gary and Marge enjoyed the winters in Apache Junction, Arizona the last seven years before his passing. They belonged to a hiking club and enjoyed exploring the local sites and volunteering at the local food bank.
Gary is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Lind); his son, Rick (Linda) and Todd (Sally), daughter, Cheryl, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and brothers, Harley and Larry.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
