John W. Michaelis

John, Michaelis, age 63, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends, in the St. Cloud hospital on Friday, August 4th, 2017 following a long battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his father Virgil and his brother Joe and he is survived by his wife Linda, his daughter Allyson, his mother Jean and his sister Joan and her family.
A lifelong resident of Monticello, John graduated from Monticello High School and attended the University of Minnesota and the General Motors school for GM dealers. In 1973, he went to work at his father’s Gould Brothers Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealership as a sales representative. In 1985, he bought into the dealership as a full partner and in 2004, after his father’s retirement, he became the sole owner of the business until he retired in 2011. John was an active member of the Monticello Rotary and was a founder of the Monticello Sportsman’s Club.
An avid hunter and fisherman, John traveled the world in search of big game and good fishing. His many trophies and wild game cookouts and fish fries were testaments to his success in those endeavors. He also loved long distance touring rides on his motorcycle and working with his hunting dogs and horses on his farm west of Monticello. The trees on his farm yielded some great maple syrup and John was proud of his sugar shack. In his later years, he would spend the winters at his home in Florida.
A visitation for John will be held at the Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel, 250 E Broadway, Monticello, on Tuesday, August 8th from 4 to 7 p.m. and a Celebration of Life will be held at his farm, 1000 NW 97th Street, Monticello, on Wednesday August 9th, at noon with visitation one hour prior to the service.
